Why Does My Hair Hurt? 5 Common Causes And Easy Solutions!

In the very recent past, I have had the terrible experience of a painful scalp. It was itchy and perhaps due to my constant scratching, it also left a burning sensation. It was the very first time I encountered something like it, and so I wondered why does my hair hurt?

Have you been feeling a tugging or burning sensation on your scalp these days? Don’t panic. These cases are quite common and it is very rare that the pain is caused by a serious disease.

And because this type of discomfort can happen to anyone, it is safe to assume that there are also various causes that contribute to a painful scalp - some of them not as severe as you think.

Needless to say, I have already dealt with my scalp situation. And if a simple person like me can solve it, you will too. Read on to find out some of the causes related to painful scalp.

What Causes Scalp Pain?

There are plenty of reasons behind the discomfort you are feeling on your scalp. Take some time to investigate new hair products you have been using, or changes that have been happening within your lifestyle. This can definitely help you narrow down your options.

Oftentimes, you may find that the side effects of certain products and treatments may not occur right after use. It could be a result of buildup or prolonged use.

With this in mind, do not cross off products you thought were compatible with your skin. Instead, study up on the ingredients and components of your hair products and other cosmetics.

Other times, the cause of scalp pain has nothing to do with products. Instead, it is actually a reflection of your current health. Keep in mind that certain habits need to take place in order to get rid of your painful scalp situation.

1. Dandruff

One of the most common causes of scalp pain is dandruff.

There are plenty of causes resulting to dandruff.

But in general, the dryness and constant scratching due to itchiness may have been the cause of your discomfort.


You might have also noticed that your scalp is flaky and these white flakes fall off from your shoulders, make it even more evident that you have dandruff.

Not shampooing enough or using the wrong type of shampoo is the most common cause of dandruff. But even so, do check the ingredients of your shampoo as you may have allergies to them, causing you to itch and breakout.

Other causes of dandruff include skin related disorders such as dermatitis, psoriasis and eczema. Yeast overgrowth is another troubling cause. Consult a professional about these issues and receive proper medication to treat them.

2. Infestation

If dandruff is not your problem, you might be dealing with lice.

In case you aren’t sure about the differences between lice eggs and dandruff, lice eggs are generally firmly attached to the hair shaft.


While dandruff can be spotted throughout the hair, lice may stick to just one area.

Having your hair infested with lice and nits can very well contribute to scalp pain. Apart from the itchiness and general irritation that comes with infestation, having dandruff and lice is a big sign of unhygienic habits. Clean your hair often and invest some time to take care of it.

3. Fungal Infection

Noticed some red, scaly and dry patches? You may have a ringworm infection. This type of fungal infection may also cause hair loss and several painful boils, causing that pain in your scalp. But not to worry, a simple medication prescribed by a dermatologist will solve it.

Although more common among children, adults who do not clean their brushes or towels may also suffer from ringworm infection.

You may also catch this type of infection from your pets at home. Aside from practicing personal hygiene, make sure that your furry companions at home are also being well taken cared of.

4. Ponytails And Other Hairstyles

Believe it or not, your hairstyle may be the cause of your painful scalp.

Dreadlocks, cornrow and many other intensive styling does not only damage your hair but your scalp as well.

Constantly styling your hair into a tight ponytail will obviously affect your scalp.


Tugging your hair and your scalp will cause it to become tender, especially if you’ve been wearing that tight ponytail throughout the day. Although pretty, take it easy and be nice to your scalp.

5. Tension Headaches Or Other Trauma

Headaches can also be a contributor to a painful scalp. If you have had a previous trauma or head injury, experiencing pain on your scalp is to be expected.


However, if you do not have a previous injury or if you do not have dandruff or other infestations, you might have a brain contusion or a bruise.

If this is the case, please do visit your doctor. The pain might be brought about by internal bleeding or swelling. But in general, a common headache or other common sickness like sinus headache or migraine is the cause behind a painful scalp.
